Nike of Samothrace

Ca 240-190 B.C. This sculpture represents Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, alighting on a ship’s prow, evidently to commemorate a naval victory. The statue’s dramatic sense of movement and swirling drapery mark this as a work of the Hellenistic era (232-30 B.C.). Louvre Museum, Paris.
